Mr S Yates – Head of Academic Extension & Oxbridge
Launch of new 2008 Society to support high prior attaining students
Curiosity – Investigation – Reflection
The 2008 Society aims to complement rather than replace the ways in which departments and faculties provide differentiated teaching and learning to challenge our most capable students with subject specific knowledge, skills and understanding. The objectives of the 2008 Society are to nurture curiosity, to promote independent investigation and to encourage reflective learning through active participation in a coordinated programme of workshops. We envisage that there will usually be one workshop each half term between September and May. It is hoped that inspiring GSAL alumni from 2008-2018 will be instrumental in leading and contributing to workshops run by the 2008 Society.

Core membership of the 2008 Society is by invitation only. For this academic year, only students from year 7 and year 8 will be invited to join. The effort, progress and attainment of core members will be reviewed against other students in their year group each term. We will be doing this to make sure that the most deserving of students, in terms of all-round academic potential and exemplary engagement with learning, continue to be involved or get the opportunity to be involved with the society during their time at GSAL.
In addition to the scheduled 2008 Society workshops, there will be some events and talks which are opened up to a wider audience of GSAL students. This will enable a wider range of students to benefit from the academic enrichment promoted by the society. Any such opportunities will be advertised to all relevant students and year groups as and when more information is available. All members of the 2008 Society will be expected to attend all workshops and other such additional events and talks that will be laid on by the 2008 Society. SY
